Medical Records Coder, Level I or II Job at Power County Hospital District
Purpose: Ensure accuracy, completeness, and safe keeping of patient medical records at PCHD. Apply appropriate medical codes to assist in the preparation of a clean and accurate claim for payment.
Duties:
Assign codes to diagnoses and procedures, using ICD (International Classification of Diseases) and CPT (Current Procedural Terminology) codes
- Ensure codes are accurate and sequenced correctly in accordance with government and insurance regulations
- Follow up with the provider on any documentation that is insufficient or unclear
- Communicate with other clinical staff regarding documentation
- Search for information in cases where the coding is complex or unusual
- Receive and review patient charts and documents for accuracy
- Review the previous day's batch of patient encounter for evaluation and coding
- Ensure that all codes are current and active
Additional Duties as assigned:
- Fulfill internal and external requests for release of medical information.
- Consolidate and reconcile monthly department statistics.
- Perform data extractions for internal and external reporting.
- Collect and report daily census information.
- Manage peer review program and present at medical staff.
- Track and report provider’s incomplete charts.
- HIPAA training and education for staff members at PCHD.
- All other duties as assigned by department manager.
Working Conditions:
Stands, sits, bends, lifts, and walks throughout the facility.
- Frequently sitting and typing.
- Occasionally pushing and pulling movements.
- May be subject to frequent interruptions.
- Communicates with Providers, nursing staff, and other department employees.
- May encounter angry or hostile patients and family.
Education, Training and Experience:
- Associate's Degree in Medical coding or successful completion of a certification program
- Strong knowledge of anatomy, physiology and medical terminology
- Excellent typing and 10-key speed and accuracy
- Commitment to a high level of customer service
- Strong mathematical skills
- Familiarity with ICD-10 codes and procedures
- Solid oral and written communication skills
- Able to work independently
Job Type: Full-time
Pay: $19.29 - $31.11 per hour
