Job Description

Statement of Duties:
Responsible for instructional and general duties as indicated by the Principal, Supervisor of Fine Arts, directives of the Superintendent of Schools or his/her designee, and policies of the Saugus School Committee.

Maximize the quality of music instruction including private lessons and shows
Be sure the students are learning the fundamentals of music, not just songs
Create and document thoughtful lesson plans

1 year experience teaching and/or performing music professionally
Knowledge of music theory and curriculum design
Excellent ability to deal well with a wide range of customers and other people
Strong organizational skills
Very strong customer relations skills / Interact with parents and students regularly by being visible and accessible in the school
Resourceful and good problem-solver
Works well under pressure
Ideal candidate is a working musician who also has formal music school training
Enthusiastic, flexible, patient, and positive demeanor
Good judgment a must
Passion for teaching

Job Requirements

  • Qualifications:
  • Licensed by the State Department of Elementary and Secondary Education of Massachusetts.
  • Candidates for a position in Chorus/Music Education must present evidence of training in the following areas:
  • Curriculum and methods for Music and Chorus Education.
  • Psychology in child and/or adolescent growth and development.
  • Proficiency as evidenced through transcript of undergraduate and graduate work in Music/Choral Education.
  • Successful experience or supervised student teaching in the field in which the candidate applies.
  • Through general music classes, spend time introducing children to various musical performers and styles.
  • Students learn about creating, performing and listening to music.
  • Provide students with basic vocal instruction and teach them about various instruments, including percussion, brass, woodwinds and string instruments.
  • Use hands-on activities to teach children pitch, rhythm and music notation.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of the subject matter and pedagogy it requires to engage students in high quality learning experiences.
  • Sound understanding of the different ways students learn and ability to provide differentiated instruction.
  • Ability to design units of instruction with measurable outcomes and challenging tasks.
  • Ability to develop well-structured lessons with aligned objectives and appropriate student engagement activities.
  • Ability to design a variety of formal and informal assessments.
  • Strong ability to regularly use data to draw conclusions and to make adjustments to instruction and practice.
  • Ability to create learning experiences that guide students to identify their strengths, interests and needs.
  • Awareness and knowledge of Discipline Based Arts Education processes.
  • Ability to integrate music lessons with classroom teachers in conjunction with their regular instructional program.
  • Ability to lead Choral Concerts throughout the school year for students, parents and the community
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate and acceptable.
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience preferred
  • Bachelor degree preferred
  • Citizenship, residency or work visa required
